The story begins with a hand curled around another man’s throat. This is Roman justice: Emperor Tiberius first dispatches a traitor—a friend he once trusted with the city—then the man's whole family and all of his friends. It is as if he never existed. Into this fevered forum, a child is born. His mother is Agrippina, granddaughter of Emperor Augustus. But their imperial blood is neither balm nor protection. Rather, it is a liability. Blood is easily spilled or poisoned. So swiftly corrupted. As the aging Tiberius becomes blind to the ignoble end awaiting him, Agrippina sees the future.

In 1770, the fuse of revolution is lit by a fateful command - “Fire!” - as England’s peacekeeping mission ignites into the Boston Massacre. The senseless killing of civilians leads to a tumultuous trial in which lawyer John Adams must defend the very enemy who has assaulted and abused the laws he holds sacred. The taut courtroom drama soon broadens into a stunning epic of war as King George III leads a reckless and corrupt government in London toward the escalating abuse of his colonies.

Millions of Americans witnessed the tragic deaths of the crew, which included New Hampshire schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. Like the assassination of JFK, the Challenger disaster is a defining moment in twentieth-century history—one that forever changed the way America thought of itself and its optimistic view of the future. Yet the full story of what happened, and why, has never been told.

On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Publisher's summary
"Michael's changing accents magnify our ability to follow and enjoy the novel. The compelling production transports listeners to the suffering of the entrenched infantry living in lice-filled uniforms and the pilots who stood in their cockpits to reach the firing mechanism of their machine guns. In a thick German accent, the historic Red Baron comes to life in a way that no printed page could ever portray"—AudioFile on To The Last Man, an Earphones Award winner
From the bestselling author comes the story of rising conflict between the super-powers that gripped the world, a global war that almost happened: The Cuban Missile Crisis.
In 1961, the new president John F. Kennedy, inherited an ill-conceived, poorly executed invasion of Cuba that failed miserably and set in motion the events that put the U.S. and the Soviet Union on a collision course that nearly started a war that would have enveloped much of the world.
Extensively researched and vividly imagined, The Shadow of War brings to life the many threads that lead to the building crisis between the Soviet Union and the United States in 1962.
Told from a multitude of perspectives and voices, from the Russian engineer attempting the near impossible task of building the missile launch facilities in Cuba, to the U.S. Navy commanders who ships are sent to "quarantine" Cuba, to the Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, desperately trying to maintain a challenging balancing act between the conflicting demands of various powerful forces, to the brothers Kennedy (Bobby and JFK) who can't allow Russia to land nuclear missiles in Cuba, or to appear weak in confronting Khrushchev, but keenly understand how close they are dancing to the edge of war.
Shaara brings to life all the action and actors, famous and little known, that embodied a war that almost happened, the Cuban Missile Crisis.
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

Award-winning novelist Taylor Brown brings to life one of the most compelling events in twentieth-century American history, reminding us of the hard-won origins of today’s unions. In 1941, Lenin's body was moved from his tomb on Red Square and taken to Siberia. By 1945, a victorious Stalin had turned a poor country into a victorious superpower. Over the course of those four years, Stalin, at Churchill's insistence, accepted an Anglo-American press corps in Moscow to cover the Eastern Front. Stalin imposed the most draconian controls-unbending censorship, no visits to the battlefront, and a ban on contact with ordinary citizens.

The American Civil War stands at the center of the story, its military history and the drama of emancipation the highlights. Taylor relies on vivid characters to carry the story, from Joseph Hooker, whose timidity in crisis was exploited by Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson in the Union defeat at Chancellorsville, to Martin Delany and Mary Ann Shadd Cary, Black abolitionists whose critical work in Canada and the United States advanced emancipation and the enrollment of Black soldiers in Union armies.

Jeff proves he has a knack for historical fiction.
Jeff and Paul are both on the top of their game here, Paul's narration and accent skills in particular. Using RFK and Khrushchev as two of the main POV characters was an excellent idea, with Russo, is it, being, I'm assuming, fictional. Would recommend this for anyone with an interest in the Cold War, such as myself.

Shaara again for the win!!!
It doesn’t not matter the topic or subject matter but Jeff Shaara is winning. Frozen Ground. The Rising Tide. Etc etc all continue on the trail that his father blazed with Killer Angels. He has taken the genre of historical “fiction” to a new level. Years ago I met one of the people from his WW2 books who was working as a docent at the WW2 museum in New Orleans. Shaara has covered it all just about The Civil War East and West The American Revolution WW1 and WW2. He is the master of these type stories

JFK Adoration
I was familiar with the author from the civil war series that he inherited from his father. Both provided accurate and intriguing exposition. The reader should know that Shaara worked for the JFK administration as a very young intern. The book is a slobbering wet kiss of a portrait of 35. Everything he did was exactly right from Cuba (except for Bay of Pigs - that was the CIA fault) to civil rights. Nothing about his last positive side. It gets tedious

A Thrilling Account of a Frightening Time
Having lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis as a young boy, I still felt captivated by Jeff Shaara's account of an event in human history that could have resulted in the start of World War III. It brought back many memories of what we went through and made one realize just how close we came to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Paul Michael, as always, delivered a stirring narration that puts both he and the author at the top of my list of favorite audiobook teams. I look forward to their next project.
